Last month HHS members enjoyed a fascinating walk through the streets of Whitehall Park expertly guided by Oonagh Gay.
In glorious sunshine we began by learning about the religious history of the area. Next we covered the decline of domestic service and its impact on the layout and size of the houses. We learned that at one point there was both a workhouse and orphanage sited in the area. Together we reflected on how devastated some of the streets were by losses of their young men in the First World War. Finally, we had the opportunity to admire carvings of a monkey and a fox – and an old stink pipe!
