Using extensive archival sources, historian David Seton – who lived in the locality for many years -traces the area’s evolution from a patchwork of fields in the 1600s to the distinctive tree-lined terraced streets that largely define the neighbourhood today.

The construction of the new Archway Road in 1811 marked a significant development but major urbanisation did not come until the 1880s and 1890s. The grand finale was the absorption of the Whitehall Park estate into this development after the construction of some of the largest and grandest houses in the area.

This expert and engaging account tells the story of an attractive corner of north London: from rows over sewers to a royal visit, with a vivid and touching account of the Alexandra Orphanage which once stood on Hazellville Road.
