Wartime London in Paintings

12th April 2023 @ 8:00 pm

Speaker: Suzanne Bardgett – The Imperial War Museum

Painting of people sheltering
Edward Ardizzone, In the Shelter, IWM ART LD472

Suzanne Bardgett works at the Imperial War Museum and will give a talk based on her book Wartime London in Paintings, published by the IWM in 2020.

The works were all purchased or commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee, chaired by Sir Kenneth Clark.  Suzanne will show how some of the artists encountered the war in a very immediate sense as firemen, fire-watchers or nurses, and how their letters to the Committee – also held by the IWM – document their responses to the extraordinary sights they saw.

Among the artists discussed will be Edward Ardizzone, Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Evelyn Dunbar, Frank Dobson, Ruskin Spear, Carel Weight and Charles Ginner, all of whom produced works that give insights into life in the wartime capital.
