Views of London before 1800: the collection of Richard Gough of Enfield

25th June 2018 @ 12:15 pm

Bruce Castle Museum painted by Richard Gough

Join Bernard Nurse, author of the beautifully-illustrated book ‘London: Prints and Drawings before 1800’  to hear more about the London views that form part of the Bodleian Library’s extensive Gough Collection of British topography.

The collection

This collection of exquisite images of views provide an invaluable visual record of the capital and surrounding countryside – especially of North London in the Georgian period, including Bruce Castle in Tottenham. They include many unique and rare maps, manuscripts, prints and drawings.

The private collector and Enfield resident, Richard Gough, who bequeathed the items in 1809 to the Bodleian Library, was a noted antiquary and patron of topographical artists. His observations recorded in unpublished diaries and letters illuminate contemporary life – including the problems with local highwaymen, burglars and floods.

About the author

Until his retirement, Bernard Nurse was the Librarian of the Society of Antiquaries, previously he had been a librarian at Southwark Local Studies Library and today is the chairman of the Dulwich Society’s Local History Group.
