The Silver Lining : The Context of the 1619 Map of Tottenham

27th November 2019 @ 7:30 pm

The 1619 map of Tottenham was created from information drawn from the Dorset Survey of Tottenham and Wood Green and is the earliest know map of the area.

Peter Barber will explain the evolution of estate mapping and suggests why, and how, the 1619 Tottenham map came to be created 400 years ago and its intended purposes. ¬†It’s a fascinating story involving a¬†spendthrift, a strong woman, a novel means of maximising your income and a skilful surveyor.

This talk accompanies the Bruce Castle Museum exhibition “The Land Beneath Our Feet”.
