Picturing the Past and the Present

11th October 2023 @ 8:00 pm

Alexandra Palace Theatre – ‘Through the proscenium arch’
Alexandra Palace Theatre – ‘Through the proscenium arch’

The Victorian theatre at Alexandra Palace

Speaker: Roger Hancock

In this talk, Roger will review some of the developments since 1873 that have shaped the theatre’s interior and its performances.  It has had a checkered, but nevertheless, engaging history.  This includes showing early pantomimes, ‘spectacles’ and operas through to cinematograph projection, and being a liminal storage space for the BBC and The Open University. More recently, it has undergone an imaginative restoration that respects a long history of some 150 years.  This refurbishment offers a modernist performance venue that makes creative use of the stage and a notably spacious auditorium.
