London’s Squares and Gardens

10th January 2024 @ 8:00 pm

Speaker: Peter Mathers

Which public house next to a nineteenth century garden square in south west London is owed money by the American embassy because of broken windows?

What is the connection between a hidden garden within the precincts of Westminster Abbey and the ecclesiastical argument that ranged for hundreds of years as to the precedence between the archbishops of Canterbury and York?

In which museum garden will you find a collection of Anthony Gormley sculptures?

And which London garden square has a memorial to a Hollywood film star?

Based mainly, but not exclusively on the popular London Open Gardens Weekend, this talk is a pictorial tour around some of the famous and less well-known green spaces of our capital city.

About the speaker

Peter Mathers, is based in York (but regular visitor to London) who fell into giving talks almost by accident after a job delivering staff training for a high street bank led him to enjoy public speaking.

Until recently he was a trustee of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies and through them he has been accredited as a national speaker for this organisation.
